California Chrome is running for history on Saturday, June 7th, at Belmont Park in Elmont, NY. Over the last five weeks California Chrome was able to captivate America on the First Saturday in May by winning the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The 3 year old son of Lucky Pulpit was able to duplicate that winning performance two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse. The stage is set for history to be made, easy right? Not so fast, the last Triple Crown winner dates back to Affirmed in 1978, a drought of over 35 years! Will this be the year that the streak comes to an end? California Chrome is going into the race as the odds on favorite, some predict he will go off at 2/5 or even lower. His 77 year old trainer believes California Chrome is doing better now than he has in any other week this spring. There are many contenders that have a chance to steal the crown away from the Chrome. Wicked Strong had a very impressive fourth place finish in the Derby after a troubled start. WS skipped the Preakness in preparation for the Belmont, giving him a five week rest and recovery period. Another top competitor is Ride on Curlin. ROC had a troubled trip in the Derby, but came back two weeks later to finish second to the Chrome at the Preakness. Many people believe the mile and a half with suite ROC better, and predict he could possibly pass the Chrome deep in the stretch. With over 100,000 people expected in attendance, the electricity will ignite Elmont, NY. One thing is certain, at 7pm on Saturday night; the racing world will be the talk of the town, or perhaps a back page story of heartbreak. The race is on!
