This year marks the 20th edition of the FIFA World Cup, an international men’s soccer tournament like no other! This year’s edition is taking place in Brazil. It is the second time that Brazil has hosted the event, 1950 was the last year in which they hosted.
National teams of 31 countries advanced through qualification games, this journey to the cup began in June of 2011. A total of 64 matches are being played in 12 cities across Brazil in stadiums either new or redeveloped over the past few years. For the first time at a World Cup Finals, the matches are using goal-line technology, as well seeing the use of vanishing spray for free kicks. This advancement is a change for the World Cup, which makes it rare because soccer has stuck to its roots throughout its innovative years. The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner was Spain. They defeated the Netherlands 1–0 in the final to win their first World title. The previous four World Cups staged in South America were all won by South American teams.
